Heitor Villa-Lobos was the most important guitar composer of the 20th century. His set of 12 Etudes and 5 Preludes are the ground-breaking pieces that set the stage for all the works that follow. The 1st etude broke the mold by introducing the most challenging right hand pattern yet developed for the fingerstyle repertoire. My version of the 1st etude was developed after years of studying the 1928 hand-written manuscripts. later editions and Abel Carlevaro's notes. Carlevaro was an important South American performer, composer and pedagogue who had the opportunity to study with Villa-Lobos. He revealed that the first editor, Andres Segovia, made many changes to the manuscripts between the time HVL first wrote them down and the time of publication more than 20 years later. This version incorporates some of the suggestions made by Carlevaro for approaching the technical difficulties of this piece.
