2001’s Enemy at the Gates sees director Jean-Jacques Annaud and composer James Horner reunite for the first time since 1986’s The Name of the Rose. They would later collaborate a further two times with 2011’s Black Gold and 2015’s Wolf Totem. Describing the events surrounding the Battle of Stalingrad in the winter of 1942-1943, Enemy at the Gates tells a fictionalised version of the exploits of Vasily Zeitsev, a sniper and Hero of the Soviet Union. As Vasily’s notoriety increases, Major Erwin König, director of the Wehrmacht sniper school is tasked with killing Zeitsev and crushing Russian morale. Much of James Horner’s score carries a sense of momentum and brutality appropriate to the depicted horrors of war, but the bittersweet romantic relationship between Vasily and Tania, a private in the local militia, provides a thoughtful love theme which is heard in this End Credits cue.
