The song starts off in section A with the famous Aramaic words spoken on the Cross, during Christ's crucifixion, "My God, my God! Why have you forsaken me?" The mode of the refrain is Locrian and the texture is fugal. The verses selected from the Davidic Psalm 22 are a prophetic foretelling of the ordeal and suffering Jesus would endure on the cross centuries later. Section B uses the Latin Vulgate for Psalm 22:6-7. "But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads." Section C has Psalm 22:14&16. "I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me....Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce[fn] my hands and my feet." Section D has Psalm 22:17-18. "All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me. They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment." Section E returns to the first theme with the Aramaic words but with the order of voices changed around.
