About Baerenreiter's Sassmannshaus
Children playfully learn reliable technique at the earliest age. For more than three decades the Sassmannshaus Tradition has been the household name for excellence in beginner methods in German-speaking countries. More than half a million students have successfully learned to play using this publication.
This tried and tested German method is now available in English! The best-selling method that gave generations of European musicians their foundation is now available in English, with content and songs newly adapted for today's English speaking children.
What makes this method so special?
The child-friendly and age-appropriate text underlying the music enables children to perceive melodies as a whole and to understand their singable qualities.
Songs and scales in different positions are easily explained and mastered within the first year. This is an important advantage over methods that confine children to the first position for many years.
Note reading is emphasized from the first lesson - children are brought up to become proficient sight-readers and play in chamber music ensembles as early as possible.
In contrast to other beginner methods, The Sassmannshaus Tradition progresses swiftly by introducing advanced techniques in rudimentary form, such as shifting and varied bow strokes.
Ensemble playing is encouraged from the very beginning.
The method is suitable for single instruction as well as for group and class lessons.
The large print notes and text as well as many colorful illustrations are particularly child-friendly and very attractive to pre-school children and school children alike.
The substantial volumes contain comprehensive material and carefully calibrated learning curves. They keep children curious and interested for many months and years.

A great Violin teaching method
Young children who have taken up Violin have now a great system with wonderful books in 4 volumes giving them a brand new concept of learning and playing very effectively. The large prints in book 1 really help them to learn reading very early and I have seen great results with my students. The duets from book 3 & 4 gives them a strong ensemble playing ability.I have gone through the teaching methods of Prof. Sassmannshaus in detail and I am so happy to see his new techniques in single finger scale playing and variety of bowing techniques which can all be seen from his web site.Very easily position playing is achieved in a short time!I have been teaching, performing and composing for the past 30 years and I can definitely say this is the best system and these are the best books you can depend on for your younger generation of Violinists.

So great for young beginners
I use this book with my young students (first through third grade). There are so many things I enjoy about using this series. It reinforces rhythms and individual notes repeatedly, so young kids get a good sense of accomplishment moving through the songs, but I have the reward of seeing them master each new concept without weeks of work on one song. Note reading is immediate, and again, well reinforced by repetition. The book is designed for kids, with bright colors and text and notes in their size. I also appreciate this book introduces the use of all four fingers very early on. In looking ahead, I am excited to work with my students on positions early as well. Just appreciate an innovative approach that engages my students and supports me as a teacher.

Sassmannshaus Early Start on the Violin, vol. 1
I am using this with most of my young students, age 4-8. I like the approach and the kids love the illustrations. I have found that picking up note reading is effortless with this method. The short pieces are attractive to children and more well sequenced than many beginning methods. Somewhere near halfway and the end of Book 1 (depending on the child) I start Suzuki Bk 1. That too, is a breeze.Out of curiosity I have used it with slightly older kids (10) but they do tend to feel that a few of the things are a little too easy for them. Not necessarily true but that's OK- we use it as an exercise or skip it and move on. I explain that some of the book is written with a younger child in mind and we don't have to do everything. There is plenty of variety offered for any given skill.I love the method for young students and it's solid approach to technique and theory.
