Earl Scruggs and the 5 string banjo
This book is not only a method on bluegrass banjo by the virtuoso from North Carolina that invented the completely new and universally loved genre of the known as Bluegrass, but is a literal BA or PhD thesis on everything banjo and I’m not saying this to be kind; that is precisely what sweet old Earl has given you. Perhaps the most giving and humblest man to walk Gods green Earth has given his fanatic aspirants the finest and to my mind, priceless book on banjo ever written in exchange for mere money. I’d of swapped a kidney for it. With this book and Fred Sokolo’s 5 string banjo Roadmaps another gem of a book though even Fred will agree you won’t able to make your own B-Jo after reading his brilliant and indispensable book, but after reading Earls you will! It’s a workshop manual, a method, a repair guide and a history of the musical genre that swept the world in the late 40’s into its frenzy of joy delivered by virtuous Lord loving men. It’s simple the finest book of its type.
Along with the clever maps of Fred’s book, that fills in with clever insights into virtuosic fingerboard knowledge, and also perhaps Janet Davis’ brilliant book on Back Up Bluegrass Banjo comping, that provided you put in the work, you cannot miss becoming an extremely accomplished player in the “Bebop of Country music ” “Bluegrass”. I have not met anyone that doesn’t like Bluegrass. A truly beautiful and joyous fruit of American culture and the “drum on a stick” African inspired to grow and develop into “the American instrument”.
I just love the suckers 🙂 and I LOVE THIS BOOK.
P.S. As far as the questionnaire “ How difficult. Was this arrangement. The is largely a banjo method par excellence designed to take you from absolute beginner to quite a virtuosic level bluegrass banjo player in the 3 finger Tirando plucked “Scruggs style” so the question didn’t really apply. You’ll start a beginner and be some sweet alfalfa pickin’ hot banjo player by the last page.
