Divertimento was commissioned by marimbist Kimi Kunizuka in 1994. It was premiered by Kunizuka, Chihiro Dan, and Atsuko Ueshima at Kobe Uhara Hall on August 21st of the same year. The composition consists of three movements. However, there is no mutual relationship between the movements. It is possible to perform each independently. When playing all songs, the order of "March", "Waltz", and "Samba" is desirable.
â–ª March: Imagining a US Navy band ship is about to depart; this is the celebratory march â–ª Waltz: Mixture of Johann Strauss and Tchaikovsky â–ª Samba: A work in a pop mood that makes you want to start dancing, incorporating fun rhythms and exotic harmony (Takayoshi Yoshioka).
