Discomposure - A Study in Syncopation for Saxophone Quartet.

A funky and lively intermediate to advanced level piece with an edge of darkness and a whole lot of syncopation. The composition uses a variety of saxophone extended techniques, including key slaps and altissimo. Melodic lines constantly shift between parts, and there are significant solo moments for all performers.

The frequent use of accents, staccato and shifting dynamics reflect a sense of agitation and anxiety within the opening section, moving gradually towards a steadier and composed feel. The use of altissimo registers in the Alto Saxophone should create a shrill and high pitched layer that contrasts the other performers, adding to the disturbed and unsettled atmosphere within the work.

Performers should play with a consistently bright and punchy quality that reflects the funk style, paying particular attention to expressive techniques and note groupings, in order to maintain a sense of beat amidst the syncopated rhythms.
