Die Weihnachtsgeschichte by Arnold Melchior Brunckhorst is characterized by a lively style reminiscent of Buxtehude. The work lasts about thirty minutes and it is ideal for church services and Christmas performances with its manageable instrumentation and its moderate level of difficulty. The Biblical text (the Nativity according to Luke) is supplemented by free poetry in a number of arias and choruses, while the work is enriched by majestic trumpets.
Little is known about the North German Baroque composer Arnold Melchior Brunckhorst, except that he served as the city organist in Celle from 1697 until his death in 1725. However his few surviving works bear witness to an extraordinary musicality.
