Deus in Adiutorium is based on an earlier work of Ola Gjeilo, Vesper Variations for choir and organ. It is Gjeilo's most contrapuntal piece so far, and the variations come out of the first fugal subject that appears in the tenor part, going into measure 12. The theme appears in different shapes, such as the melody at the beginning of the piece and in the final chorale (in the bass, inverted).

Deus in Adiutorium was commissioned by the Swedish choir Voces Nordicae and its conductor, Lone larsen, in 2007.
