During the composer's lifetime, the operetta enjoyed great success, second only to the popularity of Die Fledermaus (The bat).
The Ouverture is a very popular piece, often performed during concerts but it normally requires large orchestral forces: hence the present arrangement, which only requires 1 flute, 1 oboe, 1 clarinet, 1 bassoon, 1 horn, 2 percussion players, and strings.
