Daybreak is modern and unambivalent in expression, pointing towards Clarke's wartime Chorus from Shelley's 'Hellas' (1943), with its spectacular outcries and passionate intensity. In any case, Clarke leaves no doubt about the poem's underlying situation: this is not so much a morning-song as a morning-after song, and the lovers are not only still in bed, but wound very tightly in one another's embrace.
Daybreak was recorded by Angharad Gruffydd Jones, of the Choir of Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, directed by Geoffrey Webber, on ASV CD DCA 1136, released in 2003. The disc includes Clarke's complete choral music and six vocal duets.
