Composed by Alfred Lord Tennyson; Rani Arbo. Arranged by Scott S. Stewart. This edition: audio, pdf. 19th Century, A Cappella, Praise & Worship, Religious, Traditional. 7 pages. Scott S. Stewart #1168999. Published by Scott S. Stewart (A0.1598204).
"Crossing the Bar" (1889) by Alfred, Lord Tennyson served as the inspiration for Rani Arbo’s hymn-tune of the same name. The poem is a metaphor comparing death with crossing the ‘sandbar’ between the river of life and the ocean that lies beyond death. The simple, peaceful, yet pensive version Arbo has created, is (as she says) “almost a lullaby”. This arrangement is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble to be performed a cappella. Performance time: 4:32+- “Crossing the Bar” has found its way into the hospice choir movement.
