Students will use a "swing" eighth note technique as well as chromatic finger work to produce the melody. One concept which Counting Blues highlights is the rest. Rests, especially quarter note rests, are placed on unsuspecting beats throughout to challenge students ability to use silence as part of a melody. The use of the C and G blues scales in the melody is also enjoyable for students. Counting Blues won honorable mention in the American College of Musicians International Composing Competition.
