It is based on dance styles and the soloist will need to be confident to play in a semi-improvisatory style. After an introduction there follows an extended cadenza which segues into a minuet/waltz-style section with gentle litling melody. This is followed by a Habanera section where the gracefully leaping melody needs to sound free and unrestricted by the strict accompaniment. This includes a 'freestyle' section where the cornet is alone over a simple bass/drum accompaniment. The final section is a tango, where the cornet melody soars over the accompaniment. This is an exciting piece which will be enjoyable for the band, soloist and audience.
