CONCERTO FOR HORN AND PIANO was commissioned by the horn player Miguel Martinez Megias. This piece is not programmatic as such, rather, the composer wanted to fully explore the capabilities of the horn as a solo voice and to enrich the repertoire forthis wonderful instrument. The composition is comprised of four parts, each of which has a unique character and creates a very special atmosphere: Sarabande, Toccata, Romance, and Finale.

Concerto for Horn and Piano werd geschreven in opdracht van hoornist Miguel Martinez Megias en het symfonisch blaasorkest La Armónica uit Buñol (Spanje). Het werk bestaat uit vier delen: een dramatische ‘Sarabande’, een bijzonder virtuoze ‘Toccata’, een prachtige ‘Romance’ en de ‘Finale’, waarin het tweede deel fugatisch wordt verwerkt en het concerto spectaculair afsluit. De bouwsteen van dit concerto is de reine kwint - een interval dat bij uitstek bij de hoorn past: denk maar aan de posthoornen jachtmotieven, die vaak op een kwint gebaseerd zijn. Het werk is niet programmatisch van opzet: de bedoeling van de componist was om de mogelijkheden van de hoorn alssolo-instrument zo goed mogelijk te benutten en het repertoire voor dit prachtige instrument te verrijken.

Das viersätzige Werk, das die Möglichkeiten des Horns als Soloinstrument voll auslotet,besteht aus einer dramatischen Sarabande, einer hochvirtuosen Toccata, einer wunderschönen Romance und einem Finale, in dem der zweite Teil nach Art einer Fuge verarbeitet wird und das das Werk spektakulär beendet. Baustein dieses Konzerts ist sehrpassend die Quinte: Man denke nur an Posthorn- oder Jagdmotive, die oft auf einer Quinte basieren. Eine echte Bereicherung für Hornisten.

Concerto pour Cor et Piano est une commande du corniste Miguel Mart nez Megias et du Brass Band La Armónica de la ville de Buñol, en Espagne. Il ne s’agit pas vraiment d’une oeuvre programme - le compositeur souhaitait mettre pleinement en avant les capacités du cor en tant que voix solo et enrichir le répertoire pour ce superbe instrument. Le concerto se fragmente en quatre parties, chacune dotée de son propre caractère installant un climat bien particulier. Rythmes tourbillonnants, changements de tonalités, cadences et traits lyriques viennent ponctuer cette oeuvre majestueuse.

This four-movement work, written to fully explore the capabilities of the horn as a solo voice, is comprised of a dramatic Sarabande, a highly virtuoso Toccata, a wonderful Romance and a Finale that reworks the second movement in a kind of fugue and brings the work to a spectacular close. The basic building block of this concerto, quite fittingly, is the fifth: you only have to think of the post horn or a hunting theme, which conjures up the sound of the perfect fifth. Wonderful newrepertoire for a wonderful instrument.
