After having written "Cathedrales" for brass quintet and organ for the Prague Brass Quintet (the members of which were among the best players in Czech Republic: Joseph Svejkovsky, Vladislav Kozderka, Cocik, Jaroslav Lissy et Joseph Votava) the group, in 1983, asked me to write a new piece for them that would include a string orchestra. Since I write very often in the form of the concerto grosso, the Suite concertante predictably takes this form, highlighted by frequent contrasts between the brass and string instruments punctuated with occasional horn solos in between.
As is the case with all of my compositions, the scores are inspired by the musicians to whom they are dedicated and my primary goal is to feature their artistry.

Suite concertante consists of three movements.
The Intrada (4’50’’) offers a series of contrasting musical ideas, heard over a stately majestic pulse, (quarter = 60) which proceed slowly, interrupted by occasional lulls in the action, towards a powerful and glorious final ensemble ending.
The Aria (6’30’’) of the second movement features solo sequences for the horn heard over an active sonic background of alternating and merging brass and strings.
The final Rondo (6’10’’) is a lively rhythmic musical battle between the two competing instrumental families.
