Urtext. Composed by Johann Gottfried Walther. Edited by Klaus Beckmann. Solo instruments; Softbound. Edition Breitkopf.

Johann Gottfried Walther worked in Weimar as an organist alongside J. S. Bach, and left an impressive compositional and theoretical oeuvre.

Baroque period. Score. 160 pages. Breitkopf and Haertel #EB 8678. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.EB-8678).

ISBN 9790004180426. 12 x 9 inches.

Klaus Beckmann presents a new edition of Walthers organ works in four volumes. Its underlying concept and arrangement of the various volumes are not the only aspects distinguishing it from the previous edition, which was still based on Max Seiffert's research. "Highly recommended!" (D. DeWitt Wasson, The American Organist) "Needless to say, the edition is excellent and the layout has been properly thought out." (Early Music Review)

Walther the Bach relative
I have enjoyed this book immensely. That being said, however, I am still stuck on his Fugue No. 3 in this book. Its quite challenging to play it to tempo. But Walther had a very good sense of fugal writing and seeing as his cousin was the great J.S. Bach he might have picked up a few pointers from him. Also what is important about this volume is that contains most of Walthers concertos which he arranged for organ. You see, the Germans were assimilating all things Italian from their operas, oratorios, etc. and Walther does a great job of meeting the demand, at the time, of having arrangements of what was very popular in its time. I recommend this book.
