If you have some friends that play other instruments and you wantto play some quartets with them for fun or in a performance, then this is the book for you. This collection contains 21 quartetsin a variety of styles from classical, to folk music to originalpieces that will be fun to play with any combination of four windinstruments. Quartets are a great way to learn how to playin a chamber-music setting, and this unique collection givesyou the opportunity to do it with anyone else that plays a windinstrument, making the combinations of instruments that canbe used almost limitless. This would be a great collection for usein school settings when those students come in at lunchtimeor after school. The flexibility of these quartets makes them amust-have for any wind player.
In my experience as an instrumental music teacher, I found that having students play insmall chamber music groups was a very beneficial exercise to improve the student’s overallmusicianship. A simple form of chamber music is a quartet. It is an opportunity for thestudent to play with other students of similar abilities. Aspects of playing such as tonequality, intonation, technique and ensemble skills can be developed during the process ofstudying quartets. These quartets are different in that they have many different performance options since allof the books in this series are compatible. As a former middle-school band director, I alwayshad students that wanted to come to the band room during lunch or after school, studentswho just wanted to play music with their friends. At the time, that was not possible, sincethere was very little material available that was compatible with all of the wind instruments. This book helps takes care of that. A student can now grab three of their friends nomatter what instrument they play and have hours of fun playing quartets together. Mostimportantly, they will learn something in the process. The quartets have been generally placed in the book in order of difficulty and cover a rangeof keys that are appropriate for this ability level. Special care was given to making sure thatall parts were on a similar ability level. Also, most of the musical markings are attached toboth systems, and the point size of the music was considered for ease of reading. It is my hope that this collection will help to stimulate and enhance the musicianship of theperformers. It was a pleasure for me to have the opportunity to put together this collection.I hope it is a useful tool for you for years to come.
