"Circles", for drum quartet, was inspired by Latin rock and funk bands such as Santana, Earth, Wind and Fire and Afro-Latin infused groups that were particularly prominent during the 1970s. This work explores the rhythmical intricacies and interplay of that music and in part represents a synthesis of what the composer heard in his youth. "Circles" is made up of a chain of diverse dance beats or grooves, some of which are heard multiple times in the piece. These grooves feature timbales and congas solos that often trade off with each other. The timpani provide bass lines and the drum set functions as the centerpiece supplying different backbeat rhythms throughout.
