The melody used for the poem is EASTER HYMN. ♫ piano solo arrangement by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ Charles Wesley wrote the text of Christ the Lord is Risen Today in 1739, but its first performance was not until after 1778 after the Methodist congregation was moved to the Foundery. Wesley’s poem consisted of 11 verses of 4 lines each. Later it was condensed to 6 verses. The tune Easter Hymn most often associated with the text) was published anonymously in 1708 in Lyra Davidica. ♫ Charles Wesley was born in Epworth, Lincolnshire, the son of Anglican cleric and poet. He was educated at Oxford University, where his brothers also studied, and he formed the “Holy Club” among his fellow students in 1729. Later John Wesley, his brother joined the group. ♫ Charles and John experienced spiritual conversion in 1738 and became joint leaders of the Methodist revival. ♫ Charles Wesley wrote 6500 hymns.
