Anybody can sing So it is often said, and it is not uncommon to hear in an undertone that singing in a choir is not really making music at all - after all, it works without any knowledge of music or musical training. So choir singers and conductors often invest a lot of energy in rehearsals, only to be confronted with the same questions and obstacles again and again: 'He said 'e' - what note is that again?' 'She said she's hitting half notes now - what's it to me?' 'We're supposed to do an accelerando from bar 47 - no idea what he means!' 'How? That's the same note - so why does she write 'es' once and then 'dis' immediately afterwards - what nonsense!' How easy and how much faster we could reach our goal, since we all speak the same language. The aim of this little booklet is to get a little closer to this goal. It is intended to help all choir members to quickly implement the tips and requirements of the choir director in order to make their own contribution to the choir's progress. The booklet is not a music encyclopedia. Each topic is only covered on one page in order to provide the most important basics needed for choral singing. In addition, the Internet and numerous music encyclopaedias provide sufficient in-depth information for each individual chapter. Individual topics, on the other hand, may overshoot the mark in terms of depth of content. What they all have in common, however, is that without practical experience and regular practice, everything remains mere theory. I would be delighted if the following pages could make their small contribution to a healthy choral world by helping to focus on the music and text of choral works and turn choral singers and conductors into the tools and mouthpieces of those composers and poets who have given us the most wonderful music.
