Chanson de Nuit was written to get Elgar out of financial difficulties. It is in fact a very beautiful and passionate piece which he later orchestrated, due to its popularity. This version is of equal importance to all parts and is arranged as a quintet for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Alto Sax and Bassoon, plus alternative part for Bass Clarinet instead of Bassoon.
