“Shchedryk” is not just a song.

Shchedryk is a Ukrainian skhedrivka, the roots of which go back to ancient times, to pre-Christian times. It is a song about prosperity, hope, revival, and the light that comes to the house with the New Year.

Mykola Leontovych turned a folk melody into a masterpiece — an elegant choral arrangement that became the musical DNA of Ukraine.

It was “Shchedryk” that opened the world to Ukraine:
• in 1919–1920, the Ukrainian Republican Chapel under the direction of Oleksandr Koshits performed it throughout Europe and the USA;
• after a performance at Carnegie Hall, the melody conquered America;
• later it became known as “Carol of the Bells”, but its roots are Ukrainian.

For Ukrainians, "Shchedryk" is:
