Composed by Gerhard Guter. Score and parts. Published by Walrus Music Publishing (WA.51968).This is a very accessible chart, and the perfect introduction to Brazilian music for your band. The title owes itself to the influence of Brazilian songwriter Joao de Barro, co-composer of "As Pastorinhas," the definitive Carnival marchinha; a genre of light-hearted songs related rhythmically to the military march. Following an introductory sequence that recurs later, "Bossa de Barro" alternates between two Brazilian styles - each of which have distinct and fully notated bass and rhythmic patterns. The A-section features a melodic statement in the popular Bossa Nova style, leading to a trombone statement of the Marcha Rancho rhythm with saxophone melody during the bridge. Harmonies are idiomatically Brazilian and a driving transitional section hints at the Afoxe within its bass line. Stronger saxophone sections will appreciate a soli and improvised solo changes are notated for guitar and/or trombone 1. A pairing of harmon muted trumpets with saxophones provides a fresh color for solo background figures. The optional percussion part provides a good opportunity and the drummer will have work using sticks, brushes, and mallets. The composer suggests electric bass, but an acoustic bass can be used just as effectively. The guitar and piano parts are notated so as to keep players from getting in the way of each other rhythmically. Tpt. range Bb5.5/4/4/G/P/B/D/ optl percussion. (shaker, claves, chimes or belltree, triangle).
