It refers (probably tongue in cheek) to the military defeats of Napoleon Bonaparte, the famed military commander and emperor of France. It remains popular today in the old-time, bluegrass and contra dance repertoires. It is arranged here for a traditional Intermediate String Trio (two violins and cello) to be played for fun, a quick and enjoyable concert encore or as a festival or contest entry. As the music progresses, one can hear the soldiers moving away from the enemy faster and faster.
