De Blue Ridge Mountains in de Amerikaanse staat Virginia - en de wens van de vroege inwoners om het gebied te verkennen - komen naar voren in een thema van zes noten, gepresenteerd in zowel een fanfare- als een marsvorm. Vanaf detop van de Blue Ridge kijken de ‘Virginians’ uit over de Shenandoah Valley en zien ze de Appalachen. Dit wordt weerspiegeld in de langzame passage.
