Composed by Eugene E. Englert. Text: Psalm 72. Well-creafted paslm setting for SATB. General. Octavo. Published by CanticaNOVA Publications (C5.5005).

Eugene Englert, whose distinguished career as a teacher, pianist, organist and choir director has gained wide experience for him in many fields, has here set Psalm 72 for organ and SATB choir. Mr. Englert effectively writes for the resources of the typical parish choir, using various textural options in this SATB anthem. The voice sections of the choir are given short solo passages. Often, one section (like the basses on the first page) is pitted against the rest of the choir. Antiphonal effects also emerge as men and women sing similar music at measure intervals. The text reaches its climax with a series of majestic "Alleluias" which close the anthem. While there is some divisi on the last phrase, Blessed Be the Lord does not require a large choir. In fact, Mr. Englert's superb writing will make any choir that sings this piece sound larger than it really is. The organ accompaniment is independent, but very supportive of the voices.
