Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 20 in G major, Op. 49, No. 2, is a short, two-movement work composed around 1795-96 but published in 1805. It is one of the two sonatas that make up Beethoven's Op. 49, known as the "Leichte Sonaten" or "Easy Sonatas". The sonata consists of two movements:
1. Allegro ma non troppo 2. Tempo di menuetto
The first movement features an ultra-compressed development and two surprisingly well-bound themes through motivic linkages. The second movement, a menuet, is almost a small study in instrumental textures, with sections written as if for different orchestral sections. Interestingly, the manuscript of this sonata contains no dynamic indications at all, except for two pianissimos in the second movement. This leaves pianists to interpret the dynamics largely on their own. Despite its simplicity, this sonata showcases Beethoven's ability to create graceful and naturally expressive music within the classical two-movement form. It was likely composed as a teaching aid for Beethoven's friends or their children. Beethoven never intended to publish this sonata. His brother, Kaspar van Beethoven, submitted it to a publisher against the composer's wishes. The work has since become one of Beethoven's most popular teaching pieces.
