A perfectly attuned band such as Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia has no problems to carry the listeners away even under live conditions - on the contrary. Fans of the band and their leader are grateful for the fact that the London concert in 1988 was recorded live. Thompson produces her typical sound on various saxophones and flutes powerfully and with the greatest of ease while being backed perfectly by the pushing grooves of her husband and drummer. The pieces, all composed by herself, are carried by a strong melody which lingers in the ear while her band is able to back the dynamic shifts and bring out subtle nuances.
