Composed by James Mueller, W.J. Kirkpatrick. Arranged by Daniel Loch. Christian,Christmas,Contemporary,Folk. Guitar Tab. 3 pages. Daniel Loch #3225643. Published by Daniel Loch (A0.940075).
Introduction This simple and peaceful arrangement of a Christmas classic brings out the personal nature of the guitar. Features three verses and an original bridge between each verse. In the first verse the melody is in the upper voice. In the second verse the melody is in the bass. Although this is the perfect piece for soft background music in a coffee shop or Christmas party it is also striking enough to showcase a guitarist's skill in a Christmas concert or recital.
Practice Measures 1-16 (Verse 1): The verse begins immediately from the pickup. It helps to for the full C chord before playing the first note. The most important aspect in performing this piece well is to play smoothly. The inversions in measure 2 or the shift to measure 3 can sound disconnected and punctuated if legato playing is not in mind. Also be aware of the melody. It is easy to mute the melody, especially on open strings (such as in measure 4), while changing fingers underneath. Playing a connected melody will go a long way in polishing this piece.
Measures 17-20 (Bridge): This is a reoccurring bridge that will appear at the end of the second verse and feign to appear at the end. Use your 4th finger on your fretting hand to play the G note at the 10th fret.
Measures 21-36 (Verse 2): Here the melody has moved to the bass. The upper voice functions more as a duet than as an accompaniment. It is crucial that the upper voice is held for its full duration where possible.
The rest of the piece is a repeat of previous material except the ending fakes the bridge then repeats the last four measures of the verse. The only exception is that the C7 from measure 54 has been changed to a C in measure 59.
I hope this arrangment brings you and all those you play for much holiday cheer.
