Since 1966 I have lived in a part of California, where snow falls very rarely. However, I have fond memories of watching snow fall in the Cleveland, Chicago and Boston areas where I lived for many years. Playing in the snow was one of my favorite childhood activities and I still enjoy skiing in the mountains of California. Linda Pastan's poem, At My Window, evokes memories of my feelings while watching snow fall, both at my own window and outside. I am especially moved by the experience of watching snow "falling in silence toward silence". In the music I have given verses of the poem to different voices to sing against a quiet background of falling snow. The piece ends with an expression of the silence, which accompanies and is embodied by the snow.
