Zu seinem einzigen Ballett 'Aschenbrödel hinterließ Johann Strauss nach seinem Tode mehrere autographe Partiturteile, die jedoch bis heute mit Ausnahme einer einzigen Seite verschollen sind. Anhand dieser Partiturteile sowie diverser Entwürfe, Skizzen und Aufzeichnungen erstellte Josef Bayer zunächst einen Klavierauszug (Quelle K1). Nachträglich erstellte er eine dazugehörige Partitur (ebenfalls verschollen), deren Instrumentation aus den überlieferten autographen Teilen übernommen wurde. Die für die Uraufführung in Berlin am 2. Mai 1901 gewünschten Veränderungen des Librettos durch den Choreographen führten zu einer Umstellung des musikalischen Ablaufs, den Bayer mit der Erstellung einer neuen Partitur (2. Fassung 1901, ebenfalls verschollen) festhielt. Die davon erstellten Einzelstimmen zur Uraufführung (Quelle S1) sind jedoch erhalten und konnten zusammen mit dem Ablauf des Klavierauszugs der ursprünglichen Fassung (Quelle K1) zur vorliegenden Rekonstruktion (Fassung 1899) herangezogen werden. Der Band enthält das Vorwort zur Werkgenese, die Besetzungsangaben mit Angabe des Stimmumfangs, den Editionsartikel, Hinweise zur Aufführungspraxis und den Fassungsartikel. Dem Notentext folgt der Revisionsbericht mit der Auflistung und Bewertung der Quellen sowie dem Lesartenverzeichnis. Den Abschluß des Bandes bildet der Abschnitt Textbuch
