Arias for 4-Flute Choir by Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan Flute Choir - Sheet Music

By James Galway

Sir James Galway first came upon Gilbert and Sullivan's wonderful operettas while playing with Sadler's Wells Opera orchestra, which later became the English National Opera. His fondness for good tunes, with which the G&S operettas abound, led to this collection, created with longtime collaborator and arranger David Overton. The Gilbert and Sullivan arrangements are divided into separate albums, as some of the songs are best suited to solo flute and piano, some for two flutes and piano, and some lend themselves to a flute choir. This volume for flute choir contains: Brightly dawns our wedding day (Mikado), For he's gone and married Yum-Yum (Mikado), I am a courtier, crave and serious (Gondoliers), Strephon's a Member of Parliament (Iolanthe)

Awkward and not arranged by Galway

As with the Arias for two flutes and piano, I had the impression from the product description that Galway arranged the music, but the book cover indicates otherwise. As with that volume, it just seems they wanted to put James Galway's face on the cover. The actual arranging, there are issues. It is not clear from the cover or description that some selections are quartets and some quintets. I personally consider more than five players a choir, so I wouldn't say this book is for flute choir as they indicate. Merely quartets and quintets. The strange thing, is that the instrumentation changes from piece to piece. It is a bit annoying and awkward that there is no alto flute option on the first title, and the number of C flute parts fluctuates from 3 to 4. The part writing itself tends to revolve around the lower flute parts accompanying the first flute player, except in a few places. But not enough to keep it interesting for the others. There's much better flute ensemble music out there!
