Ariadne auf Naxos
I was drawn to this opera when I saw Jessye Norman in it at the Met. I love some of Richard Strauss, but some of it is rather long and dull at times. Der Rosenkavalier was the first of his operas I became familiar with seeing it in the Palace de Garnier in Paris France. This is a wonderfully printed score, clear and very good sized print. And it is a very interesting opera, with a much smaller orchestra than Strauss' usual orchestral size. Though a vocal score will not reveal that to any musician. This version is actually a rewrite of the opera. Originally it was performed along with the entire play Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. The opera itself was quite a bit longer, especially Zebinetta's great solo aria. It was not a great success, as it was part of an already long two hour play. So Strauss revised it, and it is this version that is mostly available and performed. James Levine loved the opera and championed it, but whether it is seen as one of Strauss' best or not, I cannot say. It has it moments when it seems to really be performed a lot, then settles back into the background. However, the work is a great one, and is worth taking the time to know. And for those learning the opera, this is the best score available. I would advise also, if learning it to perform, buying the full orchestral version so as to really know what you are singing against. Great buy.
