Here is a work in the style of Peter and the Wolf in which instruments represent characters or concepts, in the case of the cello, which is the passage of time. This piece is a night in the life of the nocturnal katydid, which sings its song alongside its mate when the violin plays divisi. In their attempts to escape the bass trombone bullfrog and clarinet blackbird, the katydid's natural nemeses, one of them is injured, and the other mourns in a minor version of the leitmotif, only for the injured one to recover as they play their triumphant duet together, having survived another night.
