Here are two of the most beautiful and important patriotic songs in the American repertoire:
America The Beautiful (music by Samuel A. Ward, lyrics by Katharine Lee Bates), was first published on the Fourth of July 1882. This beautiful song was at one time considered as a candidate to replace our current anthem.
Battle Hymn of the Republic, lyrics by Julia Ward Howe, to a traditional folk hymn, was written in 1861, in the heat of the Civil War.
