Aki Vocalise for Soprano and Piano, Opus 4, was given its name by my wife, Yumi. It means 'autumn' in Japanese. She heard in the piece feelings of loneliness, and also nostalgia for autumn in Japan, an appropriate description of what I wanted to express in the work. The fragile vocalise, a wordless melody, has two main themes: a simple, plaintive melody depicting solitude which begins and ends the piece, and a second melody which is more ominous in nature, combining Chopin’s Funeral March (from his Piano Sonata No.2) with sounds of taunting and teasing, as children are prone to do. I composed the darker middle section after learning of a senseless school shooting.
