Claudio Monteverdi's Ah Dolente Partita ("O Sorrowful Parting") tells a story of pain and grief from the narrator's perspective of loss. Originally a madrigal for 5 singers, this transcription has opportunity for interediate choirs to practice intonation on union notes and phrasing in the high range of the trombone. The bass trombone part is accessible for tenor trombones with an F attachment, allowing students to explore low ensemble playing as well.
Edited to add dynamics and articulations, the trombone choir is a perfect setting for this dark and brooding music. Advanced choirs may find themselves still challenged by some exposed passages, but even intermediate collegiate groups can excel at bringing forward the power of the renaissance style final phrase.
