In the lead-up to this song, I was listening to a variety of marches from different countries—Russian, German, French, English, American. As an African American, I wondered if there were any marches representing my own cultural heritage. After searching online and finding none, I decided to create one myself, arranging it for a brass quintet, since I don’t have access to a live brass quintet (I’m a broke college student, after all!). I drew inspiration from Abel Selaocoe and African-influenced classical pieces like Symphonic Variations on an African Air by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. I hope you enjoy my interpretation of an African march.
