This familiar Advent carol opens within a relentless "piano" ostinato pattern in the bass voice. Boles skillfullly interweaves the ostinato pattern with the carol tune, exploring the many combinations of dynamic and vocal ranges and colors. The final verse explodes with the entrance of a majestic organ accompaniment based upon the same ostinato, and builds to a triumphant climax finishing in the major mode.
