Haiku is a short poetry form consisting of three verses with 5+7+5 syllables. In Japan this form has a long tradition and has become a popular art form. Many famous poets have used it to portray special atmospheres and landscapes full of associations with and consequences for the domain of human activity. The shortness of the texts leads to the composer to give the instruments space to musically describe the mood evoked in the text: an extensive instrumental prelude often introduces a characteristic atmosphere. The composition makes free use of twelve-tone techniques.
