Max Reger, the creator of forbiddingly difficult organ music, could also take a different tack. His Thirty Little Chorale Preludes are intended for semiprofessional organists always on the lookout for good organ chorales for use in Sunday church services. Reger selected the best-known tunes of his day from the Lutheran hymnal. Most of them are still in use today and form excellent additions to modern services. Michael Kube, in a detailed preface, draws a vivid picture of the composer and his superhuman creative powers.

Practical, but uninspiring
The settings are the sort of easy-to-sight-read, practical music that every organist should have on hand to fill in gaps during services. I didn't find them particularly inspiring, and I thought the treatments of the chorales were for the most part repetitious and formulaic. I can't imagine actually planning in advance to play one of these at Mass or Vespers.

A Delightful Volume
Anyone who admires G. Henle usually admires the editions because of their pristine and concise typeset and musicology. These works are a delight to play and read. I would recommend this to anyone who is pursuing a high aesthetic in music.
