24 Variations on a Bach Chorale by Fred Hersch Piano Solo - Sheet Music

By Fred Hersch

These variations are by internationally-known jazz pianist and composer Fred Hersch. The Chorale is 'O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden' ('O sacred head sore wounded' is the customary verse translation; the literal translation is 'O head full of blood and wounds') from J.S. Bach's Saint Matthew Passion. The secular version of the melody became known as 'The Peace Chorale (Because all men are brothers)', with lyrics by Tom Glazer; it was recorded by The Weavers, and by Peter, Paul, and Mary. Fred writes: 'After the terrible events of September 11, 2001, the powerful, timeless melody, and these hopeful words inspired these variations.'

    Superb set of Variations

Fred Hersch's 24 Variations on a Bach Chorale is a truly excellent and unique composition that ought to be included in the collection of piano music lovers. The 24 variations form a phenomenal unity from beginning to end, exploring the full breadth of textural, harmonic, and emotional possibilities of Bach's choral. Hersch's compositional style utilizing jazz idioms is compelling, powerful, and innovative.

    Total Rip-off

I regret that I bought this copy because it's nothing like Bach - like sounding but rather more like an etude. I got this book hoping that I could play for my church but no way!!!! I was very disappointed. Not worth $25 for sure!
