Besides the aspect of developing performance skills, these duets are disigned to help familiarise pupils with different musical syles. As for programme titles, they are intended as signposts for the players' imagination. Some of the easier duets were composed with the teacher in mind as the performer of the bottom voice; in these pieces, the part of the second trumpet is significantly more difficult than that of the first. The duets are essentially meant for trumpet in B flat, but there are no reasons why other instruments could not be used, e.g. trumpets in C, cornets, flugelhorns, horns, trombones or tubas.
