These short eight-bar exercises are generally regarded as some of the best, most versatile and comprehensive of Czerny's studies. Apart from helping to achieve speed, suppleness and versatility of tone and touch, these exercises concentrate on many essential aspects of piano technique: diatonic and chromatic scales, tone repetition, chords progressions and arpeggios, thirds and octaves, two-part playing in one hand, polyphony, alternating hands, trills and other ornamentation, etc. This new edition is based on the first edition of 1853 and contains Czerny's original fingering. Scott Piano Classics Series.

I bought this to replace my Schirmers Library edition (published 1898) which is falling apart. However, the printing in this Schott edition is too small (difficult to read) and the book is just double-stapled, not sewn. I had expected higher quality from Schott at this price point. A couple of years ago, I bought Czerny's Opus 335 School of Legato and Staccato published by Schott. The print quality of that book is excellent, the size of the print is just right, and the sewn binding is of high quality. I'm going to return this one and try the Alfred Masterworks edition. I bought the School of Velocity and Czerny-Germer Selected Piano Studies in Alfred editions and they are quite good: the print is of good quality and is legible, and the sewn binding lays flat on the piano and appears to be of good quality. I really need legibility and decent binding because I play these exercises every day.

Excellent material for warm up, as well as for enriching muscle memory for various note formations.
