About Sergei Rachmaninoff
(1873-1943) Post-Romantic Period – Russia
Rachmaninoff was a virtuoso pianist, composer, and conductor, some of whose works are among the most popular in the romantic repertoire. After studying under Nikolay Zverev, he became a pupil at the Moscow Conservatory. He graduated at the age of 19 and won a gold medal for his one-act opera Aleko. His fame and popularity, both as a composer and concert pianist, were launched by two compositions: the Prelude in C-sharp Minor, and his Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor. In the beginning of the 1900s he was on his first American tour, which cemented his fame and popularity in the United States. Rachminoff's keyboard technique was noted for being precise, clear, and legato. Rachmaninoff composed for piano, orchestra, and voice, and is particularly well-known for his concerti.
