Debussy was one of the most highly regarded composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is seen as the founder of musical impressionism. He was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1903. His music is noted for its sensory content and frequent usage of nontraditional tonalities. He won the prestigious Prix de Rome with his cantata L'enfant prodigue. He composed music for the piano, orchestra, voice, and chamber ensemble. One of his best known works is Claire de Lune.
