I wish you the greatest pleasure playing these arrangements of American folksongs. This is the first volume of folksongs for string quartet or string orchestra. You can find the second volume on this site, as well. These are not just great songs, they are lots of fun to play - you get to strum your instruments like banjos, and you can get up and dance along with the music.

This volume includes:

Love, O love O careless love!: A song of unknown origins, probably English originally. It is one of the great jazz standards, sung by great singers like Bessie Smith, Odetta, Leadbelly, and many others.

My bonnie lies over the ocean: Originally a Scottish tune, it became a huge popular hit in the 1870's.

Clementine: An American mining song, probably written in the 1880's by songwriter Percy Montrose. It starts out as a sad elegy to a miner's lost daughter. But don't be fooled – in fact, it is a clever parody of popular tunes of the day.

I been workin' on the railroad: It was first published in 1894, but at least the second half of the song predates that probably by a hundred years.

The foggy, foggy dew: Originally a British song, published in 1815.

I hope you enjoy playing this as much as I enjoyed writing it. If you enjoy this, you are welcome to try some of my other arrangements. You can see them by clicking here ), I have also arranged three songs from the Holocaust, which I arranged and distribute for free on IMSLP. You can find them at imslp.org/wiki/Category:Ravpapa. If you need arrangements of any of these songs for special combinations of instruments, feel free to contact me at yoelepst@gmail.com, and I will try to accommodate
