  • November 25, 2008 good edition

The Schirmer edition of Zigeunerweisen is laid out nicely, only four pages, and the bowings are straightforward and not weird. The fingerings in this edition are quite good - I had to change far fewer than I thought I would. I wouldn't bother learning this piece unless you planned to...

    memorize it though!

This is a necessity for any advanced, performer level student. It's satisfying to play, and amazing to listen to.

  • July 09, 2007 A piece for a true virtuoso

A well-renowned but maddening piece; it will require a full repertoire of skills. Felt the fingering and bowing could be better but was mostly satisfied with the music itself. Definitely not a piece for beginners.

Zigeunerweisen is arguably the best of the virtuosic violin reportoire. As a violinst of five years, my greatest goal is to someday play this piece. Sarasate's poignant tones really bring the instrument to life. Perhaps in ten or twenty years , I might be able to actually play it. To...

the reviewer below me: Are you sure you are talking about Zigeunerweisen? It is one of the most difficult pieces for classical violin, up there with the Tchaikovsky and Brahms concertos, and I doubt anyone with just nine months of experience would be able to play it. Perhaps you are talking about "Souvenir de Sarasate", a beginner piece by William Potstock which imitates the themes of the Gypsy Air.
