About Hal Leonard Fake Books

A "fake book" contains songs written in a concise format that includes only the melody and chords, letting you interpret the song's performance as you feel is appropriate. This is great for quickly learning songs by yourself or with an ensemble.

Each song in a fake book only has a single melody actually written out in notes, which is usually the vocal or lead melody. This melody will have the lyrics written beneath the notes, with each word aligned to its corresponding note. Above the notes of the melody will appear the names of the appropriate chords to play - for example, a "C minor" chord would be written as "Cmin" or Cm", rather than writing out all of the notes in those chords as they appeared in the original version of the song.

This format is very compact, which is why you will often see fakebooks containing 500 or more songs.

An excellent book for a beginner in reading lead sheets. My student who was assigned this book has had circa three years piano with another teacher but transferred to me to get a better understanding of reading chords. This is just what my student needs. One suggestion that would improve...

this edition would be to spiral the binding so that it lays flat on a piano music rack.

This is a great book........I use it with my adult piano students, once they can read treble clef notes with east. THEY all enjoy it, feel they can play a lot faster.......I highly recommend it and keep extras in my personal collection to sell as needed to students...

. The age group 30 to over 70 enjoy this book the most as they know many of the songs in them from childhood.

This is a great book for beginning guitar players, for teaching students chords and developing techniques in accompanying bass with a given melody line. Excellent book.
